Finding Your Anchor: Understanding Nervous System Dysregulation

Have you ever felt completely overwhelmed by a minor inconvenience, or trapped in frozen exhaustion despite a long to-do list? This is not a character flaw. It is nervous system dysregulation. When functioning optimally, your nervous system fluidly navigates between alertness and rest. However, when it becomes chronically dysregulated, you stay trapped in survival mode, oscillating between hyperarousal (anxiety, panic, racing thoughts) and hypoarousal (depression, numbness, brain fog).

Where Does Dysregulation Come From?

Dysregulation rarely happens overnight; it is shaped by your history and neurobiology. There are many factors that can contribute to nervous system dysregulation, including:

  • Complex PTSD (CPTSD) and chronic stress: Repeated trauma or prolonged stress wears down the body's natural resilience, keeping the threat response permanently active.

  • Autism and ADHD: Neurodivergent individuals process the world with unique sensory profiles and executive functioning demands. In a world built for neurotypical brains, constant sensory overload and masking can leave the nervous system in a perpetual state of high alert.

5 Ways to Return to Safety, Calm, and Ease

You can gently retrain your body to recognize safety using these somatic and environmental shifts:

Elongated Exhalations: Extend your exhales longer than your inhales to actively signal your vagus nerve to slow down your heart rate.

Somatic Grounding: Press your feet firmly into the floor. Notice the solid support beneath you to anchor your awareness in the present moment.

Co-Regulation: Spend quiet time with a safe person or a beloved pet. Nervous systems naturally mirror and soothe one another.

Sensory Minimisation: Reduce external stimuli. Dim the lights, put on noise-cancelling headphones, or step away from screens to stop the incoming data stream.

Gentle Self-Touch: Place a warm hand over your heart or belly. This simple physical contact releases oxytocin and helps reduce cortisol levels.

How Psychotherapy Can Help

While self-soothing tools are invaluable, a deeply dysregulated system often requires professional guidance to find its balance again. Psychotherapy offers a safe, structured space to map your unique triggers and nervous system states. Through somatic experiencing, trauma-informed therapy, and neurodivergent-affirming care, a therapist helps you expand your "window of tolerance." Therapy teaches you to safely process stuck survival energy, moving you away from constant defense and toward lasting ease.
